Röyttä lime works in Tornio, Finland, was built next to Outokumpu’s steelworks in 2002 for the production of quicklime and at the time was home to the Nordic region’s largest lime kiln.
The plant was expanded in 2005 with a hydrate facility and slaked lime production, mainly for the mining and paper and pulp industries. Since 2015, the lime kiln has been fuelled with carbon monoxide from the steelworks’ chromium converter, which is more environmentally sustainable than the previous fuel oil.
