Circularly produced lime
We work for sustainability in several different ways, including turning lime mud into burnt lime, SMA Kraftmesa. Lime mud is a residual product from sulphate production that arises in the preparation of white liquor. It can be recovered by burning it into burnt lime in a lime kiln and then reusing it in pulp mills as SMA Kraftmesa.
At Sandarne lime works outside Söderhamn, the raw material for burnt lime is 100% recycled lime mud supplied from sulphate pulp mills around Sweden.
SMA MINERAL STEPS IN
Pulp mills have their own furnaces that recycle lime mud into burnt lime. Sometimes the mills suffer breakdowns and that is when SMA Mineral steps in. Thanks to its high storage capacity and efficient transportation, SMA Mineral is able to make use of the lime mud breakdown, which, in worst case, would otherwise be sent to landfill. The lime mud breakdown is transported from the landfill at the mills to our production facility in Sandarne. There, the lime mud is burned into burnt lime and then delivered back to the pulp mills as SMA Kraftmesa. An excellent example of recycling and a smart way to take care of the environment!
SIMILAR TO THE OWN PRODUCT
The requirements for the burnt lime used in pulp mills are high and SMA Kraftmesa is very popular amongst our customers. It reacts more slowly than purchased lime and is similar to the company’s own product, which results in a smoother run.
