Lime is used, among other things, to neutralize acids formed during the paper and pulp production process.
For example, lime is used to adjust the pH level during chemical pulp production, where lime reacts with the acids formed during the treatment of the wood raw material. With the help of lime, the acids are neutralized to a pH level suitable for the production process.
Slaked lime – calcium hydroxide – is used to remove impurities in water and wastewater systems. This is especially important in paper mills where large amounts of water are used and need to be purified before being discharged.
Slaked lime is also used to improve the quality of the cellulose fibers used in paper production. By removing certain impurities, the fibers become more suitable for further processing.
Lime is also used in bleaching processes to remove lignin and other unwanted substances from the wood fibers. In many paper mills, calcium hydroxide – slaked lime – is used to neutralize acidic chemicals in the bleaching solutions.
At SMA Mineral’s facility in Sandarne, many of the special products developed for the cellulose industry are manufactured. We also offer high-quality magnesium hydroxide products for pulp treatment, such as in bleaching.
