SMA Mineral - A world full of lime

Powerful Reduction of Carbon Dioxide Emissions

The largest, most important, yet perhaps the most challenging part of SMA Mineral's sustainability responsibility is to significantly reduce CO2 emissions. With our and SaltX Technology's ZEQL concept – Zero Emission Quicklime – we make it possible to reach this goal.

Fossil-free electricity reduces environmental footprint

The decision to reduce carbon dioxide emissions from our burned products by 50% is made possible through SMA Mineral's and SaltX's ZEQL concept. This project is the first step toward achieving fully carbon-neutral production. Facilities under ZEQL will operate using green electricity – electricity generated without the use of fossil fuels.

Replacing fossil fuels with fossil-free electricity results in a significant reduction of CO2 emissions. Compared to traditional kiln technology, we will also be able to use a larger portion of the extracted limestone and dolomite in the process.

Handling released carbon dioxide

To achieve our long-term zero-carbon vision, we must also manage the carbon dioxide released from limestone during the heating process in the lime kiln.

The advantage of using electricity as fuel is that emissions will consist of nearly 100% carbon dioxide. This means we can avoid the costly and energy-intensive process of separating CO2 from emissions in a conventional lime kiln.

Pure carbon dioxide can be used in the production of fuels or other products (CCU) or alternatively stored in the seabed or in products that prevent CO2 from being released into the atmosphere (CCS).

New and modern factory designs will also significantly improve the working environment, particularly in terms of dust control.
