SMA Mineral - A world full of lime

Site presentation – northern Finland

East of Tornio, near the Swedish border, lie three of SMA Minerals’ Finnish facilities – places where tradition and technology meet, and where natural resources are refined into products that strengthen industry.

In Röyttä, on the coast of Tornio, SMA Mineral built a modern lime plant in 2002 directly adjacent to the Outokumpu steelworks. At the time, it was the largest lime kiln in the Nordic countries – designed to meet the steel industry’s demand for high-quality burnt lime.

Further north lies the Kalkkimaa lime plant, founded in 1917 and part of SMA Mineral since the turn of the millennium. In Kalkkimaa, dolomite is quarried on-site and processed into crushed and ground products.
About six kilometers south, in Ristimaa, quartz of exceptionally high quality is quarried. Some of the material is crushed on-site, while the rest is transported to Kalkkimaa for further processing.

Together, Röyttä, Kalkkimaa, and Ristimaa form SMA Mineral’s base in Northern Finland – three locations strongly rooted in both landscape and industry, where every ton of raw material carries a piece of the region’s long tradition of expertise and strength.
