SMA Mineral is investing in increased mesa reburning capacity at its lime plant in Rättvik. The investment is an important step in meeting growing demand from the Swedish pulp industry while further strengthening the circular use of resources.
For more than 30 years, SMA Mineral has developed a successful concept for reburning mesa from kraft pulp production. Demand has steadily increased, making it necessary to expand operations.
“It has become increasingly clear that we need to increase capacity to meet our customers’ needs. Stability and reliability of supply are essential, while this investment also creates opportunities to develop new customer relationships,” says Johan Arvidsson, Sales Manager at SMA Mineral.
Following extensive feasibility studies, Rättvik was selected as the location for the expansion. The site offers a strategic location, available capacity and opportunities for growth within the existing industrial area and operating permit.
“Making use of existing resources is both smarter and more sustainable than building a new facility. At the same time, the investment supports greater circularity by enabling more lime mud to be returned to industry, reducing the need for virgin limestone extraction,” says Charlotta Andersson Jensen, COO at SMA Mineral.
The experience gained at the Sandarne operation will play a key role in the development of the new production facility in Rättvik, with a strong focus on knowledge transfer and maintaining high standards of quality.
The project is now entering its next phase, involving plant modifications and adaptations. The aim is for the mesa reburning operation in Rättvik to be operational by summer 2027.
“All feasibility studies have been completed and we now have a clear plan moving forward. This investment strengthens our ability to meet customer demand while contributing to a more sustainable industry,” says Johan Arvidsson.
