SMA Mineral - A world full of lime

KIRSI – Sustainable Solutions from Industrial By-Streams

In Finnish Lapland, the KIRSI project is currently underway – a broad initiative aimed at finding new ways to recycle and utilise nutrients from industrial by-streams. The project brings together companies, research institutes, and regional stakeholders to develop sustainable nutrient solutions, primarily for agriculture and forestry.

“When the project started, several of our customers reached out to encourage us to participate,” says Jan-Erik Impiö, Sales Engineer at SMA Mineral. “Our expertise in minerals and circular flows was seen as potentially contributing valuable perspectives.”

The decision to join was made without hesitation. SMA Mineral’s commitment to Northern Finland is strong, and regional by-streams offer opportunities to develop recycled products with a lower environmental impact. Participating aligns perfectly with the company’s goal of operating sustainably while also enhancing customers’ possibilities for circular solutions.

“We want to create added value for our customers and develop the industry in the North in a responsible and sustainable way,” continues Jan-Erik Impiö.

A Region with Potential

The KIRSI project maps out how local by-streams can be converted into new nutrient products that both improve soil fertility and reduce the need for imported raw materials. It involves understanding the entire chain, from raw materials to logistics and actual use. The knowledge base developed during the project will support a more resource-efficient nutrient cycle in Northern Finland.

SMA Mineral’s Role and Goals

As one of many partners, SMA Mineral contributes insights into how lime-based products can be incorporated into circular processes.

“For us, participation is not about taking the lead, but rather being a constructive partner in a broader collaboration,” says Jan-Erik Impiö. “We aim to learn, share our expertise, and, over time, develop new circular products that create added value for our customers.”

A Piece in the Puzzle of Future Sustainability

KIRSI is one of many initiatives that will shape how the industry in Lapland manages its resources going forward.

“When the project concludes in 2027, we hope the results will not only provide new technical solutions but also strengthen the shared understanding of how circular nutrient flows can become a natural part of the region’s future. This is a future we are proud to be part of,” concludes Jan-Erik Impiö.
