SMA Mineral and Infinium collaborate to further strengthen industrial projects in Norway.
Filipstad, Sweden, 2024-05-10 – SMA Mineral and eFuels leader Infinium have reached an agreement that will promote the development of each company’s planned projects at Mo Industripark in Mo i Rana, Norway. The Infinium facility will use the carbon dioxide (CO2) that SMA will produce at its Zero Emission Quick Lime (ZEQL) manufacturing facility in the industrial park as raw material for eFuel production.
Infinium uses carbon dioxide and renewable energy to produce eFuel products, including sustainable aviation fuel, Infinium eSAF. Infinium eFuels can be used in existing engines and traditional infrastructure without modifications, providing a market-ready alternative to petroleum-based products. The use of eFuels helps reduce carbon emissions from heavy industry by lowering greenhouse gas emissions through a circular CO2 utilization strategy.

The carbon dioxide will come from SMA Mineral and SaltX Technology’s jointly owned brand and plant concept, Zero Emission Quick Lime (ZEQL), in Mo i Rana, Norway. The facility will produce both emission-free lime and sustainable aviation fuels, with the potential to expand beyond eFuel’s initial capacity in future phases.
SMA’s ZEQL process electrifies lime production using renewable energy. Since the emissions released in the process are nearly 100% carbon dioxide, no additional processes are required for capture or separation. The process also means that a larger portion of the raw material mined can be utilized, which in turn increases the lifespan of the limestone deposits. The CO2-neutral lime helps reduce emissions in industries such as steel production.
