SMA Mineral - A world full of lime

Our Products

SMA Mineral offers products based on the carbonate minerals limestone and dolomite. The business also includes deposits for quartz extraction, as well as a number of other minerals and rocks that can be considered by-products.

The carbonate stone is crushed, screened, and ground into fractions tailored to customers' needs. A significant portion of our volumes is also further processed through burning or, alternatively, slaking.

Quicklime and Slaked Lime

Quicklime is caustic, extremely reactive, and primarily used in industrial processes such as cement production, steel manufacturing, and water treatment. It can also be used to raise the pH of acidic soils and in certain chemical processes.

Slaked lime is used in less reactive applications such as soil improvement, water purification, food processing, and disinfection, where its milder nature and easier handling make it a better alternative

Burnt Dolomite

Burnt dolomite is used in specific contexts where both calcium and magnesium are required. Concrete examples of applications include agriculture, where both minerals contribute to better yields.

The steel industry uses burnt dolomite as a flux in blast furnaces and converters, where it binds and removes impurities from iron ore. The combination of calcium and magnesium also improves the slag's properties and the quality of the final steel.

Mesa

Mesa is a byproduct of sulfate pulp production that arises during the preparation of so-called white liquor. The mesa can be recovered and reburned into quicklime in a mesa kiln and then reused in pulp mills.

At our facility in Sandarne, mesa is received from customers in the paper industry. The mesa is burned in our kilns and then—within a circular process—delivered back to the customer.

Dolomite

Dolomite is the name of a carbonate rock that consists of the mineral dolomite.

Quartz

Quartz (SiO2) is a fine-grained metamorphic rock transformed from sandstone.

Crushed Aggregate

Crushed Aggregate is crushed stone in various fractions.

Limestone

Limestone is a carbonate rock of organic origin formed from the shell remains of marine animals.

Quicklime and Cement

Lime mixed with cement is used in construction and building contexts to enhance the properties of the material.

Slaked Lime

Slaked lime, calcium hydroxide (Ca(OH)2), is formed when quicklime reacts with water.

Calcined Dolomite

Calcined Dolomite, calcium magnesium oxide (CaMg(O)2)

Quicklime

Quicklime is the most common term for burnt limestone, calcium oxide (CaO).
